GTA is one of the most popular games out there, partly because it has what seems like endless options for both cars and weaponry. Here are some highlights for you to check out.

To hold the anticipation for GTA 6, we asked various people what games they enjoy playing. Here’s our list of 10 underrated games.

GTA games are hard to find, and it’s because Rockstar Games has such high standards, which is helpful when they set a standard like they did with GTA5. It helped make it one of the most successful games of all time and something that continues to thrive today. Here’s a list of some great games like GTA that you can currently play. Use it as a guide to finding other crime-ridden action games or just one of the best open-world games you can explore right now! See the 10 best picks we have below – they’re worth checking out if you’re looking for something similar to GTA.

Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Redemption

Rockstar is the company that came up with GTA and Red Dead Redemption. Even though these games are set in a different historical era, they still embody all of the modern game aspects like freedom & customization and have morally questionable characters who do morally questionable things. Some people say “Red Dead Redemption 2” is just “Grand Theft Auto with horses” but they’re pretty accurate in a lot of ways.

Just Cause 4

The newest game in the Just Cause series, Just Cause 4 is all about being as chaotic as possible. You can go up against enemies with a parachute or grapple hook or you can take them on by getting lifted away by a tornado and surfing around as it throws cars at other people. The ragdoll physics in GTA 5 were fun, but wait until you see how much more realistic they are in The Republic of Medici. The Just Cause 4 story won’t have the same intense feeling as any other Rockstar game but it will present a unique manner of performing crazy stunts with some satisfying results.

Watch Dogs 2

Although the original Watch Dogs took a lot of criticism for being too dark and serious, Ubisoft tried to address those concerns for its sequel. The studio’s follow-up is much more closely based on the sentiment and tone of modern GTA games, with its satire pieces focused around its setting. Remember “Life Invader” from GTA5? Watch Dogs 2 is kind of like that but on the scale of an entire game. Watch Dogs 2 is a lot funnier than Rockstar’s Silicon Valley parody, but they both have their moments. If you’re interested in poking fun at the tech industry, then both games are worth checking out. And you can also use pool balls with bungee cords as weapons.

Yakuza 0

Rockstar Games have always done a great job of creating detailed worlds in the Grand Theft Auto series and GTA5 is no exception. You can find pretty much anything you want to do outside of the main story and most side activities are fun. Yakuza 0 has a huge array of games to choose from. You can go bowling, sing in a karaoke bar, go dancing or even play arcade games like pinball. There’s even an area for the more competitive – with wrestling tournaments and gambling for the ultimate winner. The side activities are often lacklustre, but given how many there are and their variety, I’m not bothered. The size isn’t on GTA’s scale but you’ll find everything you need in Yakuza Kiwami.

Sleeping Dogs

Sleeping Dogs

Sleeping Dogs is one of those classics that had a sleeper hit back in 2012. Different combat styles and silly stunts make for an unconventional open-world crime game. The product I’m about to describe kind of feels like GTA in disguise as a classic Bruce Lee movie. The result is fantastic. Unfortunately, the sequel that included a co-op campaign got canned before it was ever released, which makes Sleeping Dogs a gem of an open-world game. A lot of people say clones have ruined other games with the same kind of gameplay style and no co-op modes available. The game even resold on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2014, so there’s no excuse to sleep on Sleeping Dogs.

Mafia 3

There is yet to exist a GTA game without some involvement with the mob in it, naturally meaning that MAFIA 3 is a great starting point for open-world fans that like stuff related to gangs. These games seem more real and tangible than the GTA series & others, but you can see the similarities that titles like San Andreas and Grand Theft Auto 4 would have. Mafia 3, the latest game in the series from studio Hangar 13, is more reminiscent of Rockstar. It’s focused on side content and has the main story that revolves around a veteran of war who’s trying to escape the demons of his past. If you liked Niko Bellic in GTA IV then you should check this out! That said, the narrative is slow-burning and provides a level of depth that you don’t usually find in video games. This means you sometimes forget it’s even a game as well as being inspired by films like The Godfather and Goodfellas.

Lego City Undercover

GTA games are written and targeted at a mature audience – they should not be enjoyed by pre-teens. However, many other computer game options can still offer all the fun of cops and robbers without the sex, drugs, rock & roll. It’s a Lego game. What else can I say? TT Games has been churning them out for years now and they’re usually pretty good- especially this 2013 release, Lego Grand Theft Auto. However, this time around the developers took a step away from their usual offering and instead delivered something different- an open-world platformer that’s focused on saving the day. I had a lot of fun playing this because it has such a nice, simple graphics style and there are plenty of side quests & collectibles to find. The in-game dialogue is also full of pop culture references which are quite funny. Lego City Undercover was originally a Wii U exclusive, but now it’s available for all systems.

Payday 2

Pay Day 2

If you miss the missions in Grand Theft Auto 4 that sent you chasing after a four-leaf clover or getting your hands dirty with heists in Grand Theft Auto 5, Payday 2 will be right up your alley. A new video game from Overkill Software lets you and your friends do all sorts of elaborate robberies. But, compared to just grabbing the money and running off, it can’t be that easy! Similar to the capers of Michael, Trevor, and Franklin in GTA V, Payday 2 lets you plan your robbery from beginning to end, as if you were playing a spy game. They require an internet connection but cooperative games bring back memories of the GTA heists that were introduced to the multiplayer in 2013. However, Payday 2 still doesn’t have those long & annoying waits.

The Simpsons Hit & Run

Yes, this game is way older than some of the other entries on this list. It’s set in an animated sitcom setting, which doesn’t sound much like a GTA-style video game at first. But Radical made it happen decades ago and it’s still a big hit to this day! Unsafe. You only need to be a Simpsons fan to enjoy this game. It features a lot of Simpsons references, and it’s generally considered one of the best games in the series. If you haven’t already, it’s worthwhile to explore the current crop of games.
