The Innovation Age of Crafting is a fun, challenging iPhone game that combines puzzles, strategy, and history. The free version of this game includes five chapters: the Stone Age, the Antiquity, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the Industrial Revolution. Each chapter contains twenty five separate levels, each of which must be beat before you can advance to the next. At the start of each level, the player is told what invention he or she must achieve- for example, level one’s secret invention is Fire. Each level features a grid that has several items on it. Some of these items are icons that you will have to move around and merge together in order to unlock new icons, and discover the level’s secret invention. Other items are obstacles that will make moving the pieces around the board so much more challenging. The aim of the game is to merge the right icons together, in the right order, succeed in discovering the secret invention, and beat the level!
This might sound easy enough in theory, but in practice, it’s really challenging. Not all icons can be merged together: for example, Nomads can not be merged with River; River can not be merged with Fire. In order to discover which icons are compatible, you can hold your finger down on an icon. The icons on the board that it is able to merge with will light up in blue. So, you know which icons can be merged together! All easy stuff from here, right? Wrong! Just because two icons CAN be merged together, does not mean they SHOULD be: only certain formulas of merging will achieve the desired secret invention that you need to beat the level! This is where the skill of the game comes in: you must merge icons in the right order to produce the right invention. Ready for the kicker? The obstacles are everywhere: you are sliding these icons across a board of stone that has holes, blocked bits, and cliff edges: your icons get trapped, caught, and even fly right off the board! One wrong move, and you are back to square one! You are forced to develop a strategy of movement in order to stay alive! This edge makes the game super intense and very exciting: like Candy Crush, this game makes you need to play again and again in order to get that desired result!
On top of its riveting puzzles, surprising challenges, and addictively tricky obstacles, Innovation has beautiful graphics and a fantastic sound track. The music matches to the chapter’s historical time period and has more depth and intrigue than any iPhone game I have ever played. The graphics are clean, fun, and impressively top of the line for a free app. Altogether, Innovation is a shockingly fun game that you won’t want to stop playing any time soon- and considering it educates you while you play, that’s not a bad thing at all!
